Pants Fitting Problems

Although photos don't tell the whole story, let's take a look at a fitting problem that can't be resolved by traditional fitting methods:

pants fitting problem - right hip

After a lot of agonizing trial and error muslins and expensive fitting courses, these pants were made according to standard sewing and fitting methods. They fit around the body just fine, BUT. . . the pants don't really fit this body and are extremely uncomfortable.

Wouldn't you be uncomfortable with your crotch seam pulling off center like that?

Why is this happening?

Look at the pants. The row of pins on the left is the actual physical center of this body.

Notice:
  • The right side of the body is a good bit larger than the left.
  • The right side of the waistline is higher than the left.
  • The center back seam  (the row of pins on the right) is pulling to the right.
  • There is a wrinkle on the right at crotch level.
  • The right pant leg is shorter than the left.
There are more problems on the front, but this is enough to make a point.

This type of fitting problem must be dealt with prior to cutting the fabric.

To get good fit, you absolutely must know what you need, where you need it and how to apply that to a sewing pattern.

To guess is a waste of time and only leads to fitting frustration.  Trial and error muslins are also a waste of time and energy.

Standard measuring and fitting methods just don't work well for hard-to-fit unbalanced bodies.  The sad thing is that so many people don't even know that their bodies are uneven.   To top it off, it seems that the older we get, the worse the fitting problems get.

There is a way to determine if you are uneven and what your problems really are.  Plus, there is a way to find out how to fix those problems.  it is called, "Common Sense Fitting. . ."

Now, let's look at the same body in the first trial pair of pants made (no "muslins")  after applying the "Common Sense Fitting  Method."

  • The center back seam is where the actual physical center of this body is.
  • The right side of the pants is cut larger than the left to fit the larger side.  She knew exactly how much she needed and where she needed it.
  • The wrinkle at crotch level on the right side is gone after the exact amount of  fabric was added to the height of the waist on the right side to accommodate the higher hip.
  • No crotch adjustment was necessary.
  • And the pant legs didn't need an adjustment either.
  • The problem was at the waist.
The problems were identified and resolved before the pants were cut out.

Many of your fitting problems are at your waist line believe it or not.  What is happening there affects the crotch and the leg length, etc.   This is a good example.
